Tournament director Ralf Weber has declared the 18th GERRY WEBER OPEN as “one of the best tournaments in history”: “We have offered the spectators a world class competition with top matches and top stars. And the final between two Wimbledon champions who have been amazing ambassadors of the sport here all week.”
For Lleyton Hewitt, his first appearance at the GERRY WEBER OPEN ended with his first title in Halle. In the final, be defeated the big favourite Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. It was Federer’s first defeat in Halle after 29 consecutive wins.
37 years old Martin Damm from the Tschech Republic has entered the GERRY WEBER OPEN doubles final for the second time. Playing with Slovakian Filip Polasek, he beat Johan Brundstrom/Jean-Julien Rojer 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
In a nerve-wracking semi-final, Philipp Petzschner made life difficult for the Swiss grass-court king, but in the end, Roger Federer triumphed 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. He now stands in the final of the GERRY WEBER OPEN for the sixth time.
For two hours, there was nothing between them; for two hours, the semi-final was wide open. But then the favourite finally breezed through. Lleyton Hewitt beat Benjamin Becker 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
“Ten strong minutes led to today’s success,” said Roger Federer after his match against Philipp Kohlschreiber. By that, he meant the time between the score of 5-5 in the first set up to 3-0 in the second. In the end, the grass court king won 7-5, 6-3.
Philipp Petzschner became the second German to come through the quarter-finals of the GERRY WEBER OPEN as he beat his favourite opponent Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last four.
For the first time since 1997, there is a Becker in the semi-finals of the GERRY WEBER OPEN. The first name is not Boris this time, though, but Benjamin. The 28-year-old from the Saarland defeated Mischa Zverev 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, although his opponent was clearly worse for wear.
The Hewitt express may not have steamed up as early as it did in recent rounds, but in the quarter-final against Andreas Beck, it could no longer be stopped from the tie-break in the first set. The Australian ended up as a clear winner 7-6 (7-0), 6-1.
Only in 2009 were there five Germans in the quarter-finals of the GERRY WEBER OPEN, but nobody had really expected Benjamin Becker to make it this time around. He was up against the number two seed Nikolay Davydenko after all, but the German surprised him with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Roger Federer did not leave Alejandro Falla even a glimpse of a chance in the second round of the GERRY WEBER OPEN as, after just 51 minutes, he completed his second victory at the tournament this year with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Mischa Zverev and French Open semi-finalist Jurgen Melzer fought for two hours and 17 minutes before the young German was able to raise his arms to the sky to celebrate on Centre Court. A 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) victory booked him a surprise berth in the quarter-finals.
Everything is going so easily for him at the GERRY WEBER OPEN: Philipp Kohlschreiber is in the quarter-finals again at Germany’s only grass court event. He had to survive a few tight situations against Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli, but he gained the upper hand with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Nicolas Kiefer had to admit defeat in his own ‘living room’. Andreas Beck won the all-German battle in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), securing his place as the second German in the quarter-finals.
Lleyton Hewitt showed why he has once triumphed on the sacred grass of Wimbledon with his second round match against Thiemo de Bakker. The former world number one from Australia won 6-3, 6-3 against the Dutchman to send out a clear signal to his rivals: they need to keep an eye on him at the GERRY WEBER OPEN.
It was a game which swung both ways, but in the end, Germany’s Philipp Petzschner was able to prevail against Viktor Troicki and, in front of a full house on Centre Court, become the first player to reach the quarter-finals of the GERRY WEBER OPEN with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win.
Roger Federer made an impressive start to his sixth title tilt at the GERRY WEBER OPEN. In the first round, he beat Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen comfortably 6-4, 6-4. It was his 26th victory in a row on the Halle grass.
Philipp Kohlschreiber became the sixth German to reach the last 16 of the GERRY WEBER OPEN, but he was made to work very hard as he defeated lucky loser Ruben Bemelmans (BEL) in three sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (10-12), 6-4.
Davydenko has spent the last three months sidelined due to injury, which could explain why it took the second-seeded Russian so much effort to beat Germany’s Simon Greul. In the end, he gained the upper hand with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win.
After three entertaining and particularly tough sets, Nicolas Kiefer emerged triumphant with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny on Centre Court on his comeback from injury.
After a wobbly opening, Philipp Petzschner of Germany turned things around to beat Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 6-3 to send the second seeded player out of the competition on day one of the GERRY WEBER OPEN.
The fans had been waiting for him, and they were not disappointed. Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt showed some good form on his Halle grass debut. He beat his compatriot and doubles’ partner Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-2.
The 18th GERRY WEBER OPEN has started with a major shock. Lucky Loser Dominik Meffert beat the fourth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-5 and is therefore the first name in the last 16.
While some of the top players have yet to play their first match, four colleagues have already three wins under their belts. Noam Okun (Israel), Rohan Bopanna (India) and the two Russians Mikhail Ledovskikh and Alexandre Kudryavtsev successfully marched through the qualification.
Roger Federer and the GERRY WEBER OPEN have signed a unique partnership for the remainder of Federer’s playing career. On Sunday, tournament director Ralf Weber and the Swiss signed an agreement which ensures Federer will participate in Germany’s only grass court tournament until he ends his career.
In recent years, Philipp Kohlschreiber has established a rhythm at the GERRY WEBER OPEN: reaching the semi-final alternates with reaching the final. After going out in the semi-final last year, reaching the final this year would therefore be imaginable...
The draw for the 18th GERRY WEBER OPEN has provided tournament favourite Roger Federer with an unpredictable opening opponent. The German participants, meanwhile, have almost all tough tasks ahead of them. Philipp Petzschner faces former Halle finalist Marcos Baghdatis.
