Interview with Alejandro Falla

How does it feel to be the first Columbian to make it to the final at a grass court tournament?
Alejandro Falla: Well, it’s an amazing feeling. I’m very happy for my second final. It’s a goal that I had. It’s been a great week for me. I fought in every match. I was down many times. I saved another break point in important moments in every match. So, I’m very happy with the way I played today. My only thing to do was fighting because I wasn’t playing that great today in the first set. I think he was playing a little better but I was fighting and then I found my way out.
Did you expect anything like that this week?
Alejandro Falla: Well, not really but I knew that I have my chances here. I played already great matches on grass court. I think it’s my favourite surface. The players know that if I play well here I can beat any player. So, I was just trying hard since the first match, just stay mentally strong on the pressure moments, just play aggressive. My return has been great the whole week. My serve, sometimes I struggle but this week it has helped me a lot.
I played already great matches on grass court. I think it’s my favourite surface.
Why is grass your favourite surface? It’s not very typical?
Alejandro Falla: Well, yes it’s a bit strange but I play aggressive. I play flat. I have a good return. I’m a leftie so my serve is not that big but here with a leftie, with the slice it helps me a lot. I play aggressive and basically my return helps me a lot. I like it. I enjoy playing here.
Who would you prefer for the final?
Alejandro Falla: I don’t know. I never beat any of them. So, it would be nice to play Roger, maybe to have a revenge from the last couple of matches on grass at the Olympics and Wimbledon. But I just want to try hard, it doesn’t matter who I play. I’m going to be out there trying to play my best tennis. I have to do it if I want to have a chance to win the title.
Against Roger I guess you have some nice memories. You were so close to beating him. Does that give you some extra confidence?
Alejandro Falla: Well, every match is different. Roger knows me well. So, it’s going to be a very tough match, a different match. He beat me here 6:1, 6:4 or 6:1, 6:2 the same way we played in Wimbledon. So, you never know. He’s playing well and it’s going to be very tough.
You just mentioned the Wimbledon match. You must have become very tired of being asked questions about it?
Alejandro Falla: Yes (laughs). Always by this time of the season people asks me that. I was watching that match and I had my chances and it brings back those memories.
Do you still think about it? Is it still in your memory?
Alejandro Falla: Not really, I’m over it already. Just when I want confidence I google and watch the match when I want some confidence for my game (laughs).
Will you watch the football match today?
Alejandro Falla: Yes, for sure. I’ll be ready at six at the hotel.
What do you think about the chances of the Columbian team?
Alejandro Falla: Well, Columbia has a great team. Most of the players play in Europe in the best leagues. So, let’s see how they manage the pressure. I think they have a better team. They are the best team in the draw but it depends on how they manage the pressure.
Columbian tennis looks as if it’s rising, even in doubles. How do you see the level for the future?
Alejandro Falla: Columbia is doing great in tennis now. It’s been a few years already that we’ve been playing on the highest level. We have very good doubles players. Santiago Giraldo is playing so good. He was in the final of a 500 tournament. So, yes, we are having a great time now. In Davis Cup we are going to have a chance of going up to the World Group. So, next year we can make it, but it’s going to be hard. Overall, I think this is important for the Columbian generations that are coming. They work very good and are trying to fight hard and I think there are going to be more players around in the next few years.
